I summed up how much I cycled so far in the last 6 months, with the help of the Google Maps Timeline feature. I cycled about 120km. Due to some really annoying data entry of the streets and junctions, and the infrequent and inaccurate GPS sampling, not every trip was correctly recorded. Good for data protection but also bad for this application, so I had to guesstimate.

@adiwan If cycling is as important to you as it is to me, I would recommend purchasing an odometer. They are quite cheap
-
@oracle I have a bicycle computer that has the feature but it is cumbersome to access in the menu. I have it only to display the current velocity / average velocity. It was just in the spur of the moment that this question came up as my father jokingly said to me that I barely drive my new car that just passed 600km.

Although I have a bike I'm interested in having a second bike more geared towards comfortable rides in the city: a ladies' dutch bicycle. I don't see a reason for having that ball-crushing crossbar between the legs that makes it hard to get into the saddle.

I have no way of knowing if the fact that I've done nothing but play BOTW for a week is, like, an ADHD hyperfocus, or Autism obsession, or just the perfectly rational realization that there is nothing of greater value in the society we have built up around ourselves
Monday, 23-Aug-21 18:13:33 UTC from web-
@scribus I had a somewhat similar experience playing BOTW. But to be fair: I had a vacation and could spend all week playing it. I tried to complete as much as it was feasible to get the good ending and solve as many shrines as I could for the much needed health and stamina upgrades.
-
@adiwan And what a terrible choice to have to make early in the game, health or stamina... lol

I need to decide on where all these new patches are going on my Levi's jacket, and also whether to get a NERV or SEELE one, and which (up to) 6 Pokemon I want and a place for all of that, and then what the hell I'm even supposed to do with a JACKET in the face of global warming and life in Southern California. Also eBay doesn't seem to even have a Ninetales patch so
Wednesday, 28-Jul-21 19:28:12 UTC from web-
@scribus I found one Ninetails patch on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/977438366/

@adiwan ooooh purty

@scribus Well I found a seller who had spelled the NERV credo right, so I bought one. Eight on, two ready, three more coming in the mail.

I'm intrigued cycling around a bicycle track around the center of my city but it's about 19km (11.5mi) long. But it's maybe a bit too long for my endurance. I could take breaks but I want to avoid that.
Monday, 26-Jul-21 13:49:08 UTC from web-
@adiwan I cancel my plans doing this. I've done a quarter of that track and it is not very good. The track is almost exclusively made of hard dirt and quite narrow. It is not a very comfortable ride. The idea was nice from the city to create such track but it is hardly used by me as it leads no almost no place I want to go, or there is a more efficient route, at least for me. At this point I'll wait until it get asphalt.

I've just read a news article about Poland that they also have a problem with people not taking the vaccine. Especially the people in very rural places and in the mountains are stubborn. In the article they reported that those people said that they live so far away from other people and cannot be infected, they had strong immune systems, and that the vaccine was unsafe. The social pressure is so big in those small communities that the vaccine enemies made talking about the vaccine a taboo subject in order not to be alienated.

@adiwan Imagine if Polio received the same reception....
-
@scribus Polio has the "advantage" that it has horrific looking results like misshapen limbs on children. Covid has death or long-term respiratory deficiencies and they are not horrible enough. A friend of my father's has a car paint shop and cannot work there anymore because covid made it impossible for him to breathe there (already had issues breathing because he did not a lot care for mask protection while painting and he is a heavy smoker).

I'm not big into LEGO but somehow I want a Star Wars Clone Wars Gunship set.
Thursday, 15-Jul-21 19:19:37 UTC from web-
@adiwan I hope they've revised the design since I tried to build Gherkins old one. That build is an unfun nightmare and produces the flimsiest model.
-
@ceruleanspark From what I've seen is big and sturdy. But I can only say that as an opinion without much insight and experience with big LEGO builds. I want it but I am aware that these sets are luxuriously expensive. I rather buy new Winter tyres for that kind of money.
-
@adiwan Gherkins was one of the first-gen models from the AOTC era, so it's entirely possible they've made the design slightly less likely to just explode on contact with a stiff breeze.
-
-
I've been looking into 3d modeling the "companion cube"-style wider crates from Star Wars. There are tons of small and subtle differences between series. http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/875956
Tuesday, 13-Jul-21 12:15:40 UTC from web-
@scribus Interesting. The dimensions of that crate is about the shape of two cubes stuck together. The shape doesn't lend that much for comics. I can imagine having 3 rows of comics in that box that are side-by-side that would approximately fill the crate's shape without major alterations. However I think that it might be too much. I think that producing these crates would be expensive as it needs a lot of manual labor. Also I have not the tools to make the crates efficiently and with quality that justifies the costs.
-
@adiwan Yeah, mass production always feels so daunting.
-
@scribus Yeah. I would need a big CNC router and/or a medium-size laser cutter to cut down in labor time and to provide decent and repeatable quality. It could be done without those but it would be not economical.

@adiwan Still neighbor drama? Or is it the damn heat?

@scribus Little bit the heat but mostly my neighbours. In the last two weeks they have woken me up 10 times in the night (about 2-3 AM) thus I could not go to sleep again. My body is so f-ed up that I can only go to sleep between 10 and 11 PM.

Just got an original inked sketch from my favorite web comic artist. The paper dimensions are somewhat odd: 33cm x 30cm. Finding a fitting picture frame is impossible without ordering a custom one. I settled with a 40cm x 40cm frame. Not ideal but the best thing that is affordable.
Sunday, 04-Jul-21 06:55:59 UTC from web-
@adiwan I think a lot of frames intend for you to use a mat to fill in the space, I have a hard enough time finding frames to accommodate (US) standard stuff like 8x10's or 8.5x11 (also, why two standards so close?!)
-
@scribus I'll use a piece of black cardboard as a backing material like in the attached picture. I did the same with all my framed comics. The picture I want to frame is still being flattened. It has been shipped rolled up, so it'll take some time to straighten. I could make a passepartout but I don't like them as they need to overlap with the picture. I could buy a custom made frame but it costs 2.5 times as much as the closest off-the-shelf model. http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/875948

The M3 screws I ordered arrived. Of course the assortment box got jumbled up during transport and the screws were all in a state of chaos. I had to sort them. During sorting I found a M4 nut, oddly enough. To prevent that entropy find its way to randomize the screw positions I put all types of screws in small zip-lock bags. I don't want to count if there are 1110 screws, washers and nuts but I suspect I got duped by some missing ones but I value my time more than the screws are worth. I already wasted time sorting them.

@scribus I solved the toothbrush problem by having about 3-4 spare brushes in stock.
-
@adiwan I've tried, but then I forget to rotate in a new one for like twice as long. Maybe I should just set a reminder in my calendar app...
-
@scribus I clean my brush thoroughly after brushing my teeth so it lasts quite a while. I change the brush when the bristles are bent enough that they impact the cleaning performance. A tooth brush lasts about 2 to 3 months. Is it too long? I don't know but it seems reasonable.

@scribus I had the same with ICQ. At some point they have changed the protocol again and my multi-messenger stopped working. Most of the contacts were "dead" and I talked to a few anyway. So I axed it with all the other instant messengers.

Cool! New Tuca & Bertie season and the first episode is on the official Adult Swim Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWIhZ0R2H7M
Monday, 21-Jun-21 18:36:27 UTC from web-
@adiwan I heard they're airing it, then putting it online free for a couple of weeks. I hope the rest of the season makes a YT appearance, too.
-
@scribus BTW: The first episode of season 5 of Rick & Morty is also there on the channel. I watched the episode elsewhere but it's neat that they put it on Youtube for the exposure. Rick & Morty doesn't need that but Tuca & Bertie needs that as its style can be off-putting very easily.

Sunday, 20-Jun-21 20:08:21 UTC from web-
@adiwan It's rather striking
-
@scribus Shooting with a Game Boy Camera is super hard. Because of the 2 bit depth you need to exploit natural strong contrasts. Also the resolution is so bad that you need to have a recognizable big shape in the foreground. Anything in the distance gets fuzzy. In that picture the pond and the trees are unrecognizable.

I'm going to cycle 4km to a bike repair shop and walk back as the bike doesn't fit into my car. The gears don't work that well as the highest gears don't work at all. I had to wait for the appointment for 3 weeks. All the bicycle repair shops are flooded with repair requests. I asked around and the closest bike repair shop (1km) had a waiting time of almost 2 months.
Sunday, 13-Jun-21 13:34:41 UTC from web-
@adiwan Dang, is it because the shops are shorthanded, or are that many people suddenly tuning their bikes?
-
@scribus Right at the beginning of the pandemic bike ownership spiked hugely here. I think that the long wait times are a result of the massive demand that roll over the available personnel. The more people using their (old) bikes the higher the probability something needs to be fixed, as in my case. I haven't used my bike for over 14 years because I had a car or I could use the bus and tram for "free" (paid with tuition costs for the uni).

Dammit. I got weak and bought a dental vacuum forming machine. I mean I do not intent using it for dental work but I want to use it to vacuform small objects. With it I can copy flat-ish small objects, either as is or I can use that as a mold.
Tuesday, 08-Jun-21 16:15:19 UTC from web-
@adiwan You don't intend to use it for dentistry, but one day you'll have a need and the tool will already be there....
-
@scribus Sure! It'll save me a trip to the dentist. I was watching Adam Savage's Tool Tip and couldn't resist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWxCvMzvxlQ I wanted a vacuform for quite some time but I'm too lazy building one myself or it was too expensive. 130 Eurobucks I can spend for an all-in-one device that looks solidly built (better than I could do).

I think "true" wireless earbuds are a scam with some extra steps. They are expensive, their batteries cannot (easily) be replaced, and they are easily lost, and need a bulky case to charge the earbuds that also adds its failure points and inconveniences to the mix (easy to be lost, battery replacement, hinge, contacts for charging...). A cable isn't perfect either but there are some models with replaceable cables, that don't make it all unusable once it eventually breaks. Tangling of the cable is annoying but it is the less bad than all the wireless earbuds will inflict once they start to misbehave or become obsolete. 3.5mm audio jacks are so "dumb" and simple that it's hard for them to fail.
Thursday, 03-Jun-21 16:27:14 UTC from web-
@scribus Oof. I guess opening the case in order to repair it will probably result in a catastrophy.
