  1. @techdisk42 Ubuntu is based on the linux kernel, the kernel being the bit of software in every OS that commicates the OS' desires to the hardware it's working with (CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD, etc..), Ubuntu has a package manager called APT where with some simple commands any binary program in it's reposity can be automatically downloaded and installed, it is an opensource project which means anyone can see all it's code and make changes and submit those changes (bugfixing, helping to develop features, etc..), these projects are usually managed by a meritocracy or a by the dev team voting for team leaders and project leaders and such; Ubuntu is based on the debian GNU/Linux distro, I used 'GNU/Linux' because that referes to the GNU tools that make the userland that is the place most ponies are using all the time (the programs that make things work), the Linux bit is because the distro is using the Linux kernel, try not to make the mistake of calling it a linux distro, it's a GNU/Linux distro

  16. My new PC parts should arive tomorrow, I can't decide what OS to chose!!! Ubuntu's Unity is da bawm but I may as well wait for 12.04, also Ubuntu packages tend to be too unstable for my liking. Debian has always had the most epic stable packages which I love but will I be unhappy with lack of non-free and old packages?! If anyone says Gentoo I'll say go back to 4chan! ... speaking of Gentoo, maybe Sabayon? or Chakra, they seem to be good.. Although I'm not much of a fan of KDE... If I had a good enough brain, more cyborg less human, then I'd go FreeBSD for stability and packages, but I do not :< Windows 7 is an annoyingly viable option especially for Steam and such (although Wine can handle that, not sure with regards to my games though), but ofcourse I'd much prefer a kernel that's had some effort put into it and isn't prone to malware and crashing itself. TOO MANY CHOICES, NONE PERFECT WHERE'S EQUESTRIAN-OS WHEN YOU NEED IT?! . . . *takes note: make equestian-os*
