  2. @mrdragon Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the rain as much. It's just that I cannot stop thinking of 'my' pony out there in a field. Wish I could get her out of the rain, get some towels to brush her dry. I only fear the landlord wouldn't appreciate a pony in the living room. Or any room of the house...

  3. @mrdragon Yeah, saw on the news Scotland is doing well. Maybe if I start a campaign for Yorkshire's independence bank holidays will stop being rainy here

  4. Talking about academia: my university has a sense of humor. At least that's how I see it when you schedule the exams of biblical studies and stem cell biology in the same hall. Or it's just clever: no way they'll try to read each others' notes.

  5. It's a Bank Holiday, thus it rains. Got to love this country.... So, time to work on revision of the PhD thesis. On page 52 I read "§2.6 Apollonian childhoods and 'the rural'" as "§2.6 Appleloosan childhoods and 'the rural'"..... Ponies invaded my mind and are there to stay.

  6. @purplephish20 @noirbatch Well, I'm still in a state of doubt though. Or perhaps Catch-22 is a better way of describing the noman's land between being overqualified and underexperienced. I had a job interview the other day - didn't get the job - but instead of being happy with the fact for the first time in a year I had an interview I freaked out over the possibility of having to say goodbye to the horses and ponies I work with.

  7. My apologies for being away for too long. I've been battling with myself for a while, did some brain squeezing and soul searching, and perhaps it's not Twilight-like, but more and more I get the impression my future isn't in academics. I love doing research, but cannot deal with the uncertainty and politics of research funding. I'm the happiest when I'm on horseback, or on Ruby's side. So perhaps my future lies more with equine work (if possible social science like, but hands on would be great too) than with sociology. A while ago I did the Pony Personality Test. Result: I'm a crossover between Twilight and Applejack. Maybe I've more Applejack traits in me than I thought at first. Or am I wrong?

  8. !yorkshirebronies Have fun tomorrow! I won't be there because I'll be exploring my musical talents: Cello Day. I hope for Octavia to be there too.... :-)

  9. This week I went to a performance by USLES (University of Sheffield Light Entertainment Society), and I want to thank them for a great evening. I nearly fell of my chair when I heard the first chords of their 'Art of Revenge' song. Yes indeed, an adaptation of the Art of the Dress. *yay* I always knew that Shakespeare and Ponies would go well together. :-)

  11. @purplephish20 Well, I don't know that many people here at university: doing a PhD is a lonely existence. What do we need the base for? If it is accommodation, then over the summer you might want to try your luck with the Accommodation Services (http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation). If it is for having a room to watch episodes... Perhaps http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/acs is an option. I do know Sheffield University has its own Anime Society (http://sheffield.ac.uk/union/get-involved/societies/anime-sheffield) and they often have Screenings. I happen to meet one of their members regularly on the bus coming back from orchestra, so I might get some info. When can we expect the lot of you invading Sheffield? Finally, I don't know anybody at Sheffield Hallam (www.shu.ac.uk), but it's an option when Sheffield University is unavailable.

  12. @mushi Boa noite de Inglaterra. Só queria dizer que gosto muito a sua imagem do fundo de Twilight. Os olhos delas... :-)

  13. @klayking Euhm..... I'm mentioned in this post but have no idea what it's all about. Can you please give me some explanation? Thanks

  14. !yorkshirebronies @klayking Sorry, but I cannot make it the 31st of March. One of my orchestra members moved heaven and earth to get me a discount on participating in a Cello Day here in Sheffield. Hopefully Octavia will give a workshop too. Anyway, have fun in Leeds :-)

  15. And after 50-odd hours work I present a new PMV. This time it's classical music: Vaughan Williams' 'The Lark Ascending' has become 'The Pegasus Ascending'. As the description states, I decided to chuck in a bit of Vivaldi: instead of following Meredith's poem I tried to describe Equestria through the seasons. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and feel free to share it :-) What? Ah yes, the URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_LTV3Wiq8E

  16. For anypony who is in Sheffield tomorrow (March 10), here is an invitation for my concert: The Sheffield Philharmonic will perform Violin Concerto (Brahms), Norfolk Rhapsody (Vaughan Williams) and Borodin's 2nd symphony. Location: Victoria Hall Methodist Church (right next to the Crucible). Time: 19:30 (that's 7.30pm...). See also http://www.sheffieldphilharmonic.org.uk/performances/1/8-spring-concert. I'll be somewhere in the cello section, and hopefully I can show I'm am good enough to do a duet with Octavia one day. Looking forward to Borodin: quite fast and difficult, but there are some parts - doing all down bowing - that make me think of Pinkie's state of mind between the last chocolate rain and defeating Discord: bring it on!

  17. @purplephish20 Excellent. I completed my blindbag collection last Tuesday, with thanks to my local Morrisons. So, now I've to look for something else....

  18. And again a job application down the drain. Ah well, only have been searching since January 2010....

  19. It took quite some time, but in the end I managed it: a new PMV, for Fluttershy, on the music of Sloan's 'Unkind'. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YftrBus2m00&feature=youtu.be

  22. @purplephish20 !yorkshire Still completely groggy from the train back - why the heating was on maximum.... blergh - it was a nice surprise to be tapped on the shoulder at Sheffield station. I want to thank you all for a great day and taking my mind off the study for the day. Bowling was fun, although I know for sure I wouldn't have done so great without the barriers in place haha. And, as you requested, here are links to 2 of 4 of my PMVs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl8pvK0iXwE http://www.archive.org/details/Pmv-Tusk

  23. @trister True. And yeah, it's part of the fun. Only thing is..... money has been tight here since I lost my job in 2009....

  24. @trister Here the blind bags aren't numbered though as in the image I saw this evening. Perhaps they are numbered in a different way, but I haven't figured that out yet. (Yorkie + numeric skills)/logic = disaster

  25. @trister Yeah, well at least where I am (Hillsborough). I also have seen bigger figurines there. And some other MLP things too. So my bank account isn't really happy with me these days :-P

  26. @klayking No access to printer here, but I see some others have. Yesterday I checked the blind bags at my Morrisons, but those were not the same bags I think....

  28. @purplephish20 Isn't that 9.48 train not going on to Leeds? I've seen a train scheduled departing Sheffield at 9.50 Anyway, if you want to get off at Sheffield to get the 10.21 train, then we can meet up under the big electronic time thingies in the mane hall. It's where the Sheffield meet started.

Friday, 27-Jan-12 22:55:56 UTC from web in context
  29. @purplephish20 Ah, that's another possibility yeah. Have been browsing the net for traintimes. Had planned to take the 9.50 train (10.48 in Leeds), but can take the 10.21 train too. Hopefully I can find you in that train :-P
