  1. I just had a kernel panic while clicking a link. There are two possibilities here: 1. The Linux-libre 3.7.1 kernel I got from the Parabola GNU/Linux-libre project is a mess or; 2. I should never touch a computer in my life ever again, as I have clearly shown to be incapable of making a system which is not a complete mess.

  4. @widget Well, gratz!

  5. @widget If you graduated in English, I'm going to study that right now and sit back all year doing nothing. On a more serious note, what did you graduate for?

  6. Credits to MPD: Creating a database of 2291 songs which are about 7 days and 4 hours of music in FLAC format in less than half a minute is pretty quick.

  7. @mushi That makes me wonder why I have never painted my nails yet. Interesting thought.

  8. @mashuga31 Same here. Definitely Google.

  9. @mashuga31 And they also actively support Open Source, create cool Open Source stuff (like Android), etc, etc. Google is a pretty good company, but I still don't want to give them too much info :P

  10. @redenchilada Google isn't the only company I don't trust (even though I trust Google more-than-average), I trust every company as little as I have to trust them. It would be silly to only not trust Google and just trust every other company completely.

  11. @nerthos Don't know, but he seems like a pretty nice guy

  12. @redenchilada Google knows enough to make practically every single person's life a complete hell. We've reached the point where we just have to hope that Mr. Google will stay a nice guy. Also, you can't really say "Google vs. Open Source" seeing how some Google products are actually Open Source (or get donated as such if they fail to the Apache foundation or the likes). With proprietary apps, you can never be really sure what it does, though, that's all. I'm not saying Google is pure evil, otherwise we would've know it by now, but it doesn't hurt anyone to not feed them more information than you have to feed them.

  13. @madflavors Because it's a saying. Sayings barely ever make sense.

  14. @thelastgherkin I didn't know that, but I guess that's a pretty strong example.

  15. @redenchilada There's a difference between "expecting the worse" and "not trusting everyone on their beautiful blue eyes".

  16. @redenchilada I'm pretty sure he said "funny poem". That poem is boring.

  17. @ceruleanspark Lately? Hasn't this been going on for at least months?

  18. "Hey, I missed this .dll file so I downloaded this and now it's still not working. Does it matter if I save it as .rar or .dll?" ~ My little brother -> And this, fillies and gentlecolts, is how my little brother will succeed in filling his PC with viruses again and then complain to me it's not working.

  19. @colfax I have a feeling you're thinking "cracker" instead of "hacker" here. Just to make sure, a hacker does not break into other systems, that's what a cracker does.

Friday, 21-Dec-12 17:16:41 UTC from web in context
  20. @redenchilada You're no hacker, that's for sure.

  21. @jla I haven't really used them, honestly, but neither have I used Google Maps.

Friday, 21-Dec-12 16:56:31 UTC from web in context
  22. @redenchilada Because they are proprietary apps I don't use. Mostly as a matter of experiment, I decided to try to use only Free software apps on my phone and, so far, it's going tremendously. I'm literally not missing anything except some boring games. Instead of Email (or, Gmail, which I did use), I now use K9 Mail and instead of Google Play I use F-Droid. Right now I'm in the state where everything is just working as I want, and I have no reason to install any of the Google Apps as I wouldn't even use them would I try to.

  23. @redenchilada I remember not being able to uninstall Google Play, Email, Gmail and similar Google Apps from my Android phone.

Friday, 21-Dec-12 15:40:12 UTC from web in context
  24. @redenchilada I'm pretty sure most Google apps are pre-installed when you get the device, and therefore can't be uninstalled unless you flash your device (or is rooting enough? I think it is, actually).

Friday, 21-Dec-12 15:33:35 UTC from web in context
  25. @zeldatra Flashing your phone is pretty much the only solution for that. I'm doing fine without any Google apps on my phone :P

  26. @ceruleanspark I do that. I buy their stuff. My problem is that every time I buy a mass-storage device, SOME of that money goes to bands that I specifically do NOT want to support.

  27. "According to Verhoeven, an improved and simplified way to gain access to legal content will be much better in fighting illegal downloading than banning illegal downloading will be." ~ A Dutch computer magazine | Even though I think the choice of wording is rather poor (as downloading is not illegal here), it's good to see that we FINALLY have a politician who appears to be gifted with "common sense", something which is quite rare nowadays.

  28. Today in Dutch law: Downloading will remain legal and "compensated" by a few added Euro on each storage device bought in the Netherlands. Uploading remains illegal. @omni is happy about downloading staying legal, but thinks the compensation is complete junk as he doesn't want his money to go to the crappy pop bands who don't need it whatsoever instead of the small bands that need and deserve it.
