  1. @fluttershy48 I've heard about that, but I think that was another person/group. I'm not sure which one, though. But we have this "the world will end" nonsense every few years. You'd think people would've learned by now that not everything means that the world will end. Otherwise, I expect the world to end on "4 December 292,277,026,596", as that is the last day that can be expressed in Unix Time on 64-bit systems.

  2. @fluttershy48 The Mayans never stated that the world would end, as far as I know. I'm pretty sure it was another person or group back then, and they never said the world would end on December 21st, only that something special would happen as it is the start of a new period of life.

  6. Oh the one side, I feel like carefully choosing my terminal colors so that I can see everything while still being able to see difference between different colors. On the other side, I feel like making every color pink. I'm not sure which one would be better...

  7. @dashierawrz Quoting the Mayans here: "That day is not about the world ending. We believe something interesting will happen then, not that the world will end." (Which roughly translates to: What the hell, people, do you have to be so stupid? Did you seriously think the world would end because a calendar ends? If that would be the case, we would've died on January first on the year the first calendar was made)

  8. I want the world to end tomorrow just so I don't have to sit through the "Look how smart we were for not believing in the apocalypse" circlejerk the day after.

  12. @goneairbourne There is a difference between Open Source and Free Software. The Open Source movement rejects the Free Software movement's ideas and focus more on the practical advantages of making software Open Source, instead of the social and political reasons for Free software. This article explains it fairly well: https://fossbazaar.org/content/software-101-open-source-vs-free-software-movement/. Remember: All Free software is Open Source (as this is required for freedom 1: "The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish"), but not all Open Source software is Free software. See: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html (The four bullet points are enough to get the basic idea, you don't need to read the complete article). But well, nice to meet you too!

  13. @coollittlebrony ...Really? I used to program a bit when I was thirteen, but it was low-quality AutoItScript. I did get into some computer magazine with it, but that was like... the only thing in life I could be semi-proud of and you're doing it when you're eleven? Oh dear...

  14. @dashierawrz Hello you! Let me introduce myself, I am @omni. If the timeline is filled with people angrily talking about operating systems or software, expect it to be my fault. I love computers (especially Linux and other Free (as in freedom) software), music and not really all that much else. Maybe a few Free games. What are your interests and who is your favorite pony?

  15. @epiclittlebrony Well, at least you understand how to use the reply button and write understandable sentences (not perfect, but understandable). Seeing the state of the average Internet user, it seems like you have a bright future coming up.

  18. @cloudchaser I got my phone battery today (yay!) but couldn't even speak ten sentences with my owner (she's not really doing all that well) so that kinda sucks. I also went into an argument on RDN, which was probably a poor choice but also fun and interesting for a bit.

  19. @zeldatra Well, I know you use Skype and stuff, which is not Free as in Freedom, so I should give you something which supports such proprietary software out-of-the-box or you'll be like "Ugh, NONE of my applications run on this stupid Linux thing!". But yeah, try Linux Mint: http://linuxmint.com/download.php (I would personally go for Cinnamon, MATE is a desktop based on the old-fashioned GNOME2 which was loved by geeks but found dull and boring by others. Cinnamon is a bit more interestingly-looking as well.

  20. @cloudchaser Meh-ish. Today has had a lot of ups and downs.

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 22:10:14 UTC from web in context
  21. @zeldatra Oh dear. Well, I know I'll be leaving you with a bad impression of Linux if I recommend you a completely "Free" distro, so I won't do that. I am also fine in assuming you want things to just work out-of-the-box and be pre-configured, right? In that case, I would recommend Linux Mint personally.

  24. @nerthos Which is why our patent system is such a mess =/

  25. @cloudchaser Hi you o,o

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 22:04:13 UTC from web in context
  26. @nerthos It has its pros and cons. It is harder to make word jokes in it, due to the lower ambiguity, so I can surely understand that would be an argument against it (though, in some times, that would surely be a pro).

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 22:04:08 UTC from web in context
  27. @nerthos You can say "It's made for people who have a hard time thinking like a human." in lojban. The grammatical structure of that is far beyond what I've learned so far, though. I should've spend more than an hour or four on a language, but I think I got pretty far in a relatively short time (8 of the 28 lessons).

Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 22:00:43 UTC from web in context
  28. @nerthos It's not part of the mission statement, and enough humans make mistakes when trying to understand sentences of natural languages. Also, a lot of sentences are not logical at all ("I ain't afraid of no ghosts" should be a good example). The argument you put forward is a risky one, though, as it can only really be dismissed from either side with a personal attack.

  29. @zeldatra I suppose it sounds similar, yes, but I've never actually spit on someone while trying to pronounce Bach.
