@redenchilada For me, it sounds completely different. Doing some research, it seems I mean the German pronunciation of the name Bach, which is different from the English one (AFAIK, Bach was a German, though). Perhaps I should look around for a sound file which can show what I mean.
-
@thatonestocking I don't know how similar they are grammatically (I believe not that much, because lojban is made to be more culture-neutral), but there are some similarities in their goals (or so I've been told).
-
@nerthos It's similar to coding your speech, yes, but this is important to prevent misunderstandings caused by being multiple ways to "decode" a sentence in most normal languages, and this also simplifies letting computers parse it. I know it seems restrictive, but I've learned enough to know there are generally a lot of different ways you can say the same thing, and there are special words which are broader, if you need to say "flying object" instead of a special kind of bird if something just flew by you, this is easily possible. I understand your concerns, though, but I haven't actually done enough lessons yet to be able to give a good reply as to why something is this way.
-
@ceruleanspark Lojban is a phonetic language, and those letters actually sound different from how they sound in the English language. "c" is pronounced as "sh" in "shop", "k" is pronounced as "c" in "cut" and "x" is pronounced as "ch" in "Bach". Q was a letter they found too ambiguous to choose a sound for, so that letter died off.
-
@nerthos Lojban is a language which really focuses on structures and conversion. {su'u} shows the beginning of a "subsentence", which ends with {kei}. {lo} converts the selbri {tavla} to a sumti, and {ku} ends this conversion. The conversion is necessary because you can only have one selbri per sentence (similar to the English language, albeit I can't think of an example right now). It sounds complicated, but one you go through the tutorial a bit, it'll actually be quite logical: http://www.lojban.org/tiki/wavelessonscontinued
-
@ceruleanspark On a related note: lojban does not have all letters of the latin alphabet. It's missing the following letters h, q and w.
-
@kamikaze Oh. Well, seems I was way off this time.
-
@kamikaze Beastie is so cute <3
-
@ceruleanspark Actually not. It was made for "unambigious communication which can easily be parsed by computers". I can give you another sentence, which will show that is probably isn't all that bad: {mi gleki lo su'u do tavla mi kei ku} which parses as {[1(2[gleki1 (happy thing(s)) :] mi I, me)2 [is, does] «3gleki being happy»3 (4[gleki2 (subject(s) of happiness) :] lo any/some <5su'u abstract nature of [6(7[tavla1 (talk-er(s)) :] do you)7 [is, does] «8tavla talk-ing»8 (9[tavla2 (talked to thing(s)) :] mi I, me)9]6 kei >5 ku )4]1} (I'm happy about the fact that you're talking to me).

@zeldatra I think Macs have something which is comparable to WINE. I think it's called Darwin? I'm not sure. At any rate, your best bet is probably having more of your favorite software being ported over to Mac, as .EXE will stay Windows-only, or having your favorite software replaced by new favorite software which does run on a Mac. In most cases, it would be a matter of time. Seeing how the desktop market share of both Mac and Linux has really improved over the years, we can both expect more software coming our ways. So, waiting and hoping it is, I suppose :P
-
@ceruleanspark Related, yet unrelated, {ti xirma} is lojban for {This is a horse/equine/[colt/mare/stallion/pony]}
-
@omni There something wrong with mind, I keep forgetting to add some words are important to understand sentence.
-
@zeldatra I wasn't trying to attack you either, so I am sorry if I made you feel that way. I wonder what's causing stuff to often end like this, though. I mean, I know you just linked me to some things you think I did wrong but, apart from trying to start an, in my opinion, interesting discussion and making a crappy joke, I can't really see anything wrong with the way it. I will consider looking back at this later, when I have time and don't forgot (albeit I'm afraid I probably will) to find out how exactly I am making people feel like I'm attacking them.
-
@ceruleanspark You're right, I will stop this discussion here then. It's a shame, really. I like having good discussions, even if others may not agree to me, but I manage to always make others feel like I'm pushing something onto them. I should look into my past discussions, and see if there is something fatally wrong with my way of wording things or the like. I must be doing something wrong here.
-
@toksyuryel Doesn't look all that interesting, no, but oh well.
-
@redenchilada Ah, that was the one I was looking for, thanks.
-
@zeldatra Oh, really? One thought-provoking quote so this place doesn't die (because you guys always cry about that), one joke and one part of a discussion where I give an explanation because you named Apple as bad for something, and called Microsoft good when they were both bad in that discussion? I really hope you aren't serious. I could go and grab a few random quotes from you as well and say "you're pushing Windows on me". Should I go and do that right now?
-
@zeldatra How is it pushing? You keep replying to these discussions, and I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to defend myself against your arguments. What am I doing wrong by giving counter-arguments against your arguments? (Also, I only stated that software should be free as in freedom. Not in monetary sense. There's nothing wrong with asking money for your hard work. The way you use free is unclear, so I had to make that clear. Besides that, is there any reason you're directly linking this to using Linux? A lot of Linux users don't agree to this, and therefore your link doesn't make any sense. Not every Linux is a "Free software supporter", and not every "Free software supporter" is a Linux user.)
-
@zeldatra Why can't we give away the source code? Also, as far as I know, giving away the source code when someone BUYS a product is fine as well (at least, fine by me). To me it seems only reasonable that if you buy something, you can do whatever you want with it. I think it's insane that our society has evolved into a state where, if you buy something, you don't own it or have any rights regarding it. Hell, Amazon can wipe all purchased ebooks off a Kindle without having to explain why or giving any compensation. Is that reasonable? Buying something and having companies take it away completely without a good reason? Sure, there are only some cases, but it clearly shows that some software is designed in ways which allow the creator to have complete control over you when they should not.
-
@mashuga31 That's not disturbing at all. No, not at all. http://mylittlefacewhen.com/f/681/
-
@zeldatra I guess? I have no clue why, though.
-
@zeldatra And another person who clearly didn't get it. There is nothing wrong with paying for Free software, but you shouldn't buy proprietary software as you're supporting your own oppression. The fact that so much Free software is also "gratis" (no money has to be spend) is just a cool bonus.
-
@redenchilada In your opinion it doesn't, in his and my opinion it does. I've seen enough cases of proprietary software misbehaving (rootkits in games, software tracking you, etc., etc.) to at least take Richard Stallman seriously. It doesn't mean I will agree with everything he says without thinking for myself, but I don't think his ideas are just junk.
-
@redenchilada He says that it's bad to use proprietary software, because it's bad for your freedom. He adds to that, saying that it's stupid to pay for such software, as you're giving up your freedom and rewarding the creator for taking your freedom away from you. That's all. No more, no less.

@redenchilada No, he did not.
-
@thatonestocking It's either "Guys, stop talking about stuff! I don't like it!" or "Guys, talk! It's so boring!". What the hell do you guys actually WANT?
Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 19:44:01 UTC from web -
@redenchilada He never said that. You're trying to find things in between his words. He still calls it bad.
-
@redenchilada @thatonestocking How does it not make sense? Which part of it don't you understand?
-
@redenchilada It makes sense if you understand his position of proprietary software being bad for your freedom. If you buy an authorized copy, you're supporting the developer in making proprietary software AND giving up your freedom, as opposed to only giving up your freedom when you use an unauthorized copy.
