Boy am I glad that I drive a Toyota, morons have emptied all the gas stations around here because they’re afraid that gas is going to go extinct

I COULD bump up the compression but it slows the export by a shocking amount so I’d rather not if I can help it.

the .fla file for that cartoon was over a gigabyte. Once I removed the CGI from it it shrank to just 9mb. I included it in the Flash file so that I could time it with the animation but I might need to rethink the way I do that because it made the file a pain in the ass to work in. Probably gonna start doing two renders - one low res, like 480p, for animation, and one full reds, 4K, for compositing.

@scribus Personally I’m a pretty big fan of the argument that the woke left is canceling his horse
-
4K cartoons are what happens when Matt’s hardware gets better but his animation level of detail doesn’t. I’m essentially doing it because I can now.

learned a new lesson today: don't ever try to import 72 4k PNGs, each one over 11MB because you couldn't be bothered to bump up the compression during the Blender export, into Flash at once

@scribus yeah

the good news: it's late so there's no traffic to throw myself in front of and it's like forty degrees so waiting on the side of the road for a car to show up is out of the question

i'm having a bit of a suicidal episode (unrelated to my pervious post) and i'm pretty sure it's an adverse after-effect of an over-the-counter mood relaxer I took earlier today, which is nice that i know what's causing it and how to avoid that in the future, but it doesn't help me RIGHT NOW, so that's fun

in a moment of hubris i lost $320 on Dogecoin tonight, which is pretty good considering there's probably a guy out there who lost his mom's house

My All Dogs Go to Heaven animation cels got here today. First time I’ve ever bought one. Hoping to get some Bakshi originals next.

@scribus Todd Howard announces at E3 that it directly ties into the flow of bottle caps in-game through an online server, which sounds cool in theory, but in practice everyone loses money because somebody figured out you could duplicate them by making your companion pick the world object up while you’re pressing the button at the same time.

Cartoons are all written by people in California which is why every town is Los Angeles in animation, Swole Foods aims to be the first cartoon ever made which does not take place in Los Angeles.

Caitlyn Jenner opposes transgender women playing in women’s sports, yet she herself competes in women’s golf tournaments. Yeah, she’ll fit right in at the GOP.

@scribus You’d think so, right? Ultimately the people who make those arguments have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about. Or they heard that Disney used to wash cels in the 60s when they were on the verge of bankruptcy and assumed that EVERYONE did that.
-
The Disney+ exclusive Star Wars-themed Maggie Simpson short was cute but ultimately felt like something Disney asked them to make like three weeks ago. Not David Silverman’s best work.

Like, yeah, someone TOTALLY reanimated Sailor Moon’s transformation sequence the exact same way every time. That TOTALLY makes sense.
Tuesday, 04-May-21 19:21:34 UTC from web -
@scribus They don’t. I saw somebody claiming the other day that pre-digital stock footage was ok because you can’t reuse cels so they had to redraw the sequence it every time which is obviously 100% untrue. It’s based entirely on whether you personally like the show in question or not because subjectivity is out of style, there has to be an objective reason now why you don’t like it (“it’s lazy” being the most common one).

“Governor Jenner” sounds like something you’d hear in a dystopian future satire film from 2009.
Tuesday, 04-May-21 02:15:12 UTC from web -
Californians, if you all get yourself into the position where you have to say “Governor Jenner” for the next two years I will be very disappointed in all of you.
-
why can’t we as a society progress past the need for Caitlin Jenner, why can’t she go away

AND those same people revere John K as an artist, despite the fact that his work was antithetical to the very concept of an “on-model” drawing! What’s the deal with that? Is it because he’s a rapist? Do cartoon fans empathize with rapists?
Monday, 03-May-21 23:49:53 UTC from web -
I’ve always subscribed to John K’s character design philosophy that more expressive > more consistent and that keeping a character exactly on-model all the time isn’t very fun to look at, so imagine my surprise when I learn that cartoon watchers these days not only want characters to be drawn the exact same way in every frame because if it’s not on-model it’s “lazy”, but they ALSO want those exact same faces to be redrawn every time because if you reuse a drawing that’s also lazy. What, exactly, is the point in redrawing things if you’re going to want it looking exactly the same as it did in the last shot, scene, or episode? We should all just use Flash puppets at that point and go back to 2008-era Newgrounds.
-
Tarzan and Treasure Planet had this really neat-looking CGI technique called Deep Canvas which was basically where they would paint background elements directly onto 3D meshes with what were essentially digitized oil paint brushes and I wish they didn’t stop doing it after like three movies because it was pretty sweet looking.

@scribus The plot of a small-town cop trying to move to a city with more crime so that he gets to shoot people hits different today too!

Dexter, but it's Louise from Bob's Burgers. Come on, Fox, you'll make a killing.

@scribus with such a massive library of stuff, a good 70% of which was super obscure and hard to come by to begin with, it's understandable that you have to use some weird sources since the original print is, in a lot of cases, not available, and they did do a really good job in a lot of areas - like managing to produce HD copies of things that were made decades ago - but it's insane to me that they didn't cut any of the commercials, especially since they DID cut contemporary movie trailers and multiple references to the NBC network, where it aired, from the same program. What was the editing standard?
-
Is this a bit? You don’t even have to get very far into it. There’s a 1970s Shake & Bake ad two minutes in.
-
I dunno if Disney is, like, aware that they did this, but one of the “Wonderful World of Walt Disney” specials they did in the 70s appears to have been sourced from a VHS recording with all of the contemporary commercials intact.
