  1. I just ordered a (cheap) crimp tool just to add a connector to a new fan for my 3D printer. Hopefully it'll be utilized for more than that.

  2. @drinkingpony Sometimes people don't get the basicness of HTML. BTW: I have a tux t-shirt but I haven't worn it for almost a decade and I usually peel off every sticker possible except for the ThinkPad logo stickers. Those OS, graphics card and processor stickers on the palm rest are the worst.

  3. @scribus Whistles? I thought these were already a battalion of enormous church pipe organs that attempt to play the longest note.

  4. @drinkingpony I wish. I got it off amazon from a 3rd party seller and it was the last one and it was not cheap (120€). I saw a similar model for 80€ but the order got cancelled because it was a warehouse error and wasn't actually available. My keyboard that I have has the model number 55Y9017 (site with model numbers for other language layouts http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/printableversion.wss?docURL=/common/ssi/rep_ca/0/877/ENUSZG09-0520/index.html ). The one I initially wanted was FRU57Y4655 but it cannot be found anywhere.

  5. @drinkingpony Somewhat yeah. This is why it's great. It's basically the keyboard and a USB control board. It has even holes on the other side for draining liquid in case of a spill (like a Thinkpad laptop). I wish it just had a little bit more weight. It´s meant to be portable so I don't weight that against it.

  6. You can call me a heretic but I like my FN key on the far left (ctrl and fn placement switched). I like it because I don't need to spread my pinkie finger for CTRL+C, so I just slide my hand down from the base finger placement down and I'm right there where I want to be.

  9. On some better news: I have my almost "dream" keyboard. It's a USB Thinkpad Keyboard with older style keys (no chiclet). The keyboard feels a little bit flimsier than my proper laptop Thinkpad keyboard, however it is still 1000 times better than a modern laptop keyboard like on a newer Dell Latitude laptop. On my company laptop I have huge difficulties typing because of the weird and unnatural form and placement of the keys. I often use F12 and 9 times out of 10 I press the print key or the carriage return key is super slim in the horizontal. Also I have with my new keyboard a proper working "nub". As much I appreciate the gesture from Dell to include the nub in the keyboard but it ain't work or feel right. That and the "mouse" buttons are horribly spongy with almost no tactile feedback and the actuation threshold is too low.

  10. @drinkingpony it's that my company does not offer the projects I'd like to do. I was lent to another company to make VR trainings but they cannot afford me anymore due to budget cuts. I really enjoyed that despite having some problematic moments. I'd do something in a similar vein. Right now I'm stuck programming for a sensor simulation development environment.

  13. No wonder my stepper motors were super hot. The voltage reference was out of whack. They were about 1.3V instead of 0.84V.

  14. @drinkingpony Haha. How comes? I only know someone I studied with and was super enthusiastic about the Hololens and bought it for himself for playing around (as in programming with it). I'd say he was a sane guy and quite intelligent so I think that was a purchase with more promise for the future. As for non-programmers it'd be definitely insane.

  15. I'm soooo glad I made the 3d printer board upgrade with better stepper drivers. It is so silent now that the fans are making the greatest noise. I'm so mad that I didn't do much earlier. To be honest the "ideal" board was recently released that fits into the existing enclosure and I got that. So my anger is very much no deal. I just could have had a significantly better sleep on some prints. A few times the motor noises made it hard to get to sleep and the printer and me were separated by two doors.

  16. @drinkingpony No sane person buys a Hololens for oneself. The Hololens 1 is a tech demo for itself. Limited interaction opportunities (a single hand gesture or a button on a remote) (it has bluetooth but there is no standard input device) and a very limited field of view, and it is hugely expensive. The Hololens 2 fixes a lot of problems by almost doubling the field of view and offering full hand tracking within the field of view. It has to be determined how good it performs and if it is affordable at all. So far the industry shows more interest in these products than normal mortal consumers. I don't think that it will change anytime soon.

  23. I've decided to soon-ish™ upgrade my PC. It won't be as thorough as I wanted but it'll be a first step. I'll get "only" a new CPU, mainboard, RAM, and SSD. The graphics card will be replaced later.

  24. @drinkingpony This thing is ultra light. The cable will drag it wherever it wants. Also miniHDMI is prone to deteriorate when being pulled and bent silly. I need to think about printing a fixture for my miniHDMI to normal HDMI adapter to the enclosure before I can do anything else (I want it to last at least for a little bit). In the end it'll probably end up somewhere behind the TV with sticky velcro.

  28. @scribus All I can manage is to have two small 14'' CRT TVs. Everything else is too big and bulky. The composite/s-video to HDMI converter I bought is so far one of the best in that price range that can handle oddball resolutions that these old consoles produce. I have a cheap 15€ piece of crap that created results that were nearly unrecognizable after upscaling (at a lot of places seemingly inverted colors). 240p is almost nowhere supported by any TV manufacturer nowadays. It'll interpreted as 480i and it shows unfavorable interlacing artifacts. Blowing that up bilinearly to full-HD it gets to a blurry mess.

  29. @thismightbeauser In theory I could claim my money back because I paid with PayPal and order it again. I'd still have to wait a long time but I'd not spend money on top of the loss. It's just a 120€ expensive video converter to convert my NES/SNES/N64/MegaDrive to HDMI.
