  1. I've seen a bunch more benchmarks and my view hasn't changed much but it's more competitive as the first review I've seen has indicated. However there were reported weirdness from the drivers. For creative people it might be a hard decision as NVidia cards seem to be more stable and better supported by such software. However for video editing the extra VRAM might be mighty beneficial. It's a tough decision this time but I'm leaning more towards NVidia at the moment although they are slightly more expensive. When the hardware shortages and availability improves it might also improve on the AMD side. At this time I can only save money and drink a lot of tea waiting and observing.

  3. Oof. The Radeon 6800(XT) benchmarks look rough. Fair but not as competitive as I wished it to be. As it looks right now I rather wait when NVidia cards are readily available and have a little bit more of VRAM.

  4. Last week I wanted to use the laser cutter of my local maker space, however due to everything happening it's closed. I wanted to make 32 custom comic short boxes out of 3mm MDF.

  8. @scribus I'm glad my monitor has an integrated USB hub. I have a mouse, keyboard, scanner, drawing tablet, VR headset, and an external HDD, a microphone, and a webcam attached to almost all available ports of the whole system. I use the front ones occasionally for the SD card reader. So I'm pretty much maxed out.

  10. It depresses me that there are less and less new PC cases with space for optical drives (CD/DVD/BluRay). I'm starting to look around for a new PC. As my PC is older and my case has only USB2 ports and an unreliable headphone jack, as well as showing wear I want a new one. My current case is from Cooler Master from 2006. 19. Oh God I hate Amazon's bot chat. I always used the email option because I despise the chat. The bot makes it even worse. I had my already prepared text for a complaint for a late prime delivery that gives me a 5€ voucher. The chat takes a lot more steps between my complaint and its resolution and a lot more time. First I have to click trough the bot responses and then do the whole customer support dance to get to my desired result.

  22. Oooh. A potential vaccine was developed (German news site https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/biontech-corona-impfstoff-103.html ). It needs two injections 3 weeks apart. A week after the second injection an immunity to COVID is expected. I hope it is not a fluke.

  23. @scribus I could do that too but the North Sea is toooo damn cold haha I don't know if the indoor skiing halls are open in Summer.... The mountains near me are not tall enough for snow all year around. I would need to drive to the Alps and it takes about 8 hours to get from where I live. But it isn't worth the time and gas.

  25. @scribus Yeah... I understand. California. Palms and barely any falling leaves and constantly warm weather (as in not freezing). In Germany there is a rule of thumb that Summer tires should be used from Easter to October. There are tires that work for all year with an appropriate profile but they are not ideal but usable. Driving the Winter tires in the Summer can be devastating due to the softer rubber mixture. On a very hot day at higher speeds they can degrade super fast. Summer tires have the opposite problem as due to the lower temperatures they are not soft enough to ensure the necessary grip, especially with wet leaves on the ground and heavy rainfall or snow.

  26. @scribus My father just had used a setting on the pneumatic drill higher than needed. Well... I successfully changed the tires and that's what matters. The winter will be probably warm but I don't want to risk driving with summer tires any longer as there were some frosty days this week.

  27. @scribus When I manually tightened the screws in last year's tire change I didn't have to use my full body weight to loose them. When I manual tighten the screws they are as tight as they can get. I would say I have average arm strength but for the life of me I couldn't use the same amount of strength loosening the pneumatic drilled ones. For one screw I had to use a pipe to extend the leverage arm. This was the first time I had to use such measures.

  29. Changed my tires today. Because my father used a pneumatic drill last time I had a hard time loosening the screws. I had to literally stand on the wrench to have enough force to get over the friction.
