The worst thing about watching a documentary like Food Inc. during English class is the whole class going "eww, that's terrible" during pretty much every part where animal suffering due to the food industry is clear, but knowing they won't do the slightest thing themselves to stop supporting companies which do things they dislike. Wake up, people, this is how your meat gets produced. If you have a problem with that, change your ways! It's not that hard. Step out of your convert zone and give something new a chance. You'd be surprised about how easy it can be to change those little things in life. (Then again, who am I kidding? I'm just as bad at times, just when it comes to other things)

@nerthos I'm drinking a beer now, actually. It's alcohol-free though because it tastes nice and I don't care about alcohol at all (I just don't want more than a few glasses of alcoholic beverages).

@fluttershy48 I've heard about that, but I think that was another person/group. I'm not sure which one, though. But we have this "the world will end" nonsense every few years. You'd think people would've learned by now that not everything means that the world will end. Otherwise, I expect the world to end on "4 December 292,277,026,596", as that is the last day that can be expressed in Unix Time on 64-bit systems.
-
@ceruleanspark Ah, baktun! That's the term I was looking for. Thanks so much for fixing my mistakes there.
-
@omni ya it was a other grup but if you think about and stuff there was a leap year so then the world would have ended about a year ago

@goneairbourne There is a difference between Open Source and Free Software. The Open Source movement rejects the Free Software movement's ideas and focus more on the practical advantages of making software Open Source, instead of the social and political reasons for Free software. This article explains it fairly well: https://fossbazaar.org/content/software-101-open-source-vs-free-software-movement/. Remember: All Free software is Open Source (as this is required for freedom 1: "The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish"), but not all Open Source software is Free software. See: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html (The four bullet points are enough to get the basic idea, you don't need to read the complete article). But well, nice to meet you too!

@cloudchaser I got my phone battery today (yay!) but couldn't even speak ten sentences with my owner (she's not really doing all that well) so that kinda sucks. I also went into an argument on RDN, which was probably a poor choice but also fun and interesting for a bit.
-
@cloudchaser sorry
-
@tohelo not its fine no worries ^^

Ok, I think I'm gonna try Linux, just to see what it's like. @omni Wat Distro?
Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 22:07:42 UTC from web-
@omni It's fine, you can talk abound free beer. The only one who'll try to stop you is red.
-
@zeldatra Well, I know you use Skype and stuff, which is not Free as in Freedom, so I should give you something which supports such proprietary software out-of-the-box or you'll be like "Ugh, NONE of my applications run on this stupid Linux thing!". But yeah, try Linux Mint: http://linuxmint.com/download.php (I would personally go for Cinnamon, MATE is a desktop based on the old-fashioned GNOME2 which was loved by geeks but found dull and boring by others. Cinnamon is a bit more interestingly-looking as well.
-
@zeldatra I'd go with Mint or Ubuntu.
-
-
SO HOW ABOUT THOSE HORSES.
Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 21:16:34 UTC from web -
@redenchilada For me, it sounds completely different. Doing some research, it seems I mean the German pronunciation of the name Bach, which is different from the English one (AFAIK, Bach was a German, though). Perhaps I should look around for a sound file which can show what I mean.
Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 21:45:17 UTC from web-
@omni I do believe the german pronounciation of ch involves spitting on someone.
-
@zeldatra I suppose it sounds similar, yes, but I've never actually spit on someone while trying to pronounce Bach.
RDN's Lucifer likes this. -
@zeldatra Not at all the ch in Bach is a soft one. As opposted to the sharp ch, which can be found in a name like Christian.
-
-
@zeldatra @omni Settle your ***es down, I do not want to look at two people argue over this stupid. It's pathetic.
-
@redenchilada look, I honestly appreciate these compliments you're sending my way. But I just don't swing this way.
-
@redenchilada They're fast and I really don't play video games that much.

@thatonestocking Team Fortress 2 and Minceraft. That's about it.

This is getting way out of hand. Initially it was an interesting debate but it's very rapidly degenerating into random yelling.

@ceruleanspark You're right, I will stop this discussion here then. It's a shame, really. I like having good discussions, even if others may not agree to me, but I manage to always make others feel like I'm pushing something onto them. I should look into my past discussions, and see if there is something fatally wrong with my way of wording things or the like. I must be doing something wrong here.

@zeldatra Oh, really? One thought-provoking quote so this place doesn't die (because you guys always cry about that), one joke and one part of a discussion where I give an explanation because you named Apple as bad for something, and called Microsoft good when they were both bad in that discussion? I really hope you aren't serious. I could go and grab a few random quotes from you as well and say "you're pushing Windows on me". Should I go and do that right now?

"An unauthorized copy of proprietary software is bad, but less bad than an authorized copy" ~ Richard Stallman
Wednesday, 19-Dec-12 19:35:51 UTC from web- Matt repeated this.
-
@redenchilada In your opinion it doesn't, in his and my opinion it does. I've seen enough cases of proprietary software misbehaving (rootkits in games, software tracking you, etc., etc.) to at least take Richard Stallman seriously. It doesn't mean I will agree with everything he says without thinking for myself, but I don't think his ideas are just junk.

@widget If you're talking about the _NSAKEY thing from literally 15 years ago, I'm pretty sure that turned out not to actually have anything to do with the actual NSA.
