  1. It sounds obvious in retrospect that you should just play 0 first anyway but I wasn’t expecting them to insert much from 0 into the remakes given how closely the actual story cutscenes stick to the source material

  2. I was advised by a friend to not play Yakuza 0 first if I’m planning to go through the rest of the series because the gameplay in Kiwami is a serious downgrade from that, and the plot points in 0 don’t matter until like 6, but Majima is repeatedly referring to stuff that happened in 0 every time I see him so I’m starting to think I actually should have played that first. Will probably play that before Kiwami 2.

  5. Not that I think this is a bad thing, but I got whiplash upon learning that Kiryu, a Japanese man in 2005 approaching middle age who in the lead-up to Yakuza has been in prison since the 90s, and before that having been in a criminal syndicate since the 80s, is not homophobic, and is perfectly pleasant and even supportive of his cabaret date upon learning she’s a lesbian.

  7. @scribus Definitely look into using Blender, make the assets in like Inkscape or something, export them either as high res transparent PNGs, import them into Blender as planes, light uniformly, place the camera above the assets looking straight down with an orthographic lens, animate the assets, render out using Blender EEVEE which renders in seconds using consumer graphics hardware.

  11. A bit disappointed that the final plot twist in Tears of the Kingdom ISN’T that Zelda did the nasty in the pasty and became her own ancestor, especially since they mention in dialogue that the (assassinated and childless) queen of Hyrule at the time is supposedly Zelda’s ancestor, which is impossible and also never mentioned again)

  12. @scribus my CGI models are all built in an incredibly stupid way that would make any other 3D artist pull their hair off so for this pilot I’ve had to go in and clean up some things in the event that somebody else has to look at it.

  13. Graham Linehan has been left financially destitute from his obsessive anti-trans bigotry which, in theory, means that I could probably buy the rights to Father Ted off of him for five bucks and a Sainsbury’s coupon so that nobody has to feel bad about watching it, right?

  14. @scribus Moho or Blender would be your best bets probably, with the latter you could just prep the images in Photoshop or something like that beforehand you could just import each element into Blender as a plane and just have the camera looking at them flat from above, with a sun lamp pointing straight down for uniform lighting.

  15. @scribus I unfortunately do not, before they went subscription-only Clip Studio Paint EX was a great low-cost alternative for small projects (but it leaves a lot to be desired for longer projects unless you also have Adobe software for compositing). It didn’t have tweening or anything like that to speed things up though, it relied on the user being familiar with frame by frame. Blender is free and has a 2D workflow but I personally hate the drawing tools. I’ve heard great things about Moho, both versions are one-time purchases, and I was considering switching to it for Swole Foods as it’s easier to learn than ToonBoom, but I can’t personally recommend it as I’m not familiar with it myself.

  24. When I first started animating, I always looked at stuff like Futurama and thought “man I’d love to incorporate 3D into what I do and make it look so seamless like that” and like I basically was always trying, My Little Brony 2 of course having that awful CGI castle set, but the technology is at a point now where I can get it actually looking BETTER than what Futurama and Invader Zim could achieve back in the day with consumer-level hardware and software. I’m gonna do a full like tour of the CGI sets I have built for this pilot at some point because it’s really something. There are not very many painted backgrounds at all, they’re all renders, and they all look fantastic and fit right in with the character animation thanks to Blender EEVEE.

  26. I’m a bit late to the party here, but seeing as how we saw the material live, I’m actually probably a bit early. John Mulaney’s “Baby J” is probably more accurately described as a radio drama than a standup special. Bar the intro, which is a mostly unrelated set of jokes about his childhood, the entire film is one very long story about Mulaney’s drug addiction, but more specifically his intervention, stay in rehab, and road to recovery, as well as musings and side tangents about possible causes behind his addiction, his drug fueled escapades including a reading of an interview he gave which he claims to have no recollection of, and stories about his doctor “Dr. Michael”, who sexually harassed him and sold him a lot of his drugs in the first place, all circling back around again to his childhood. This does not sound like a very funny show, but it manages to be as outrageously funny as it is introspective, and very much worth a watch/listen.

  28. @scribus More so in the sense that it was old news by the time the episode aired - the rebate was a pre-9/11 initiative, the episode aired in 2003, & even on the DVD commentary the writers acknowledge it was a bit of a dated topic at the time. Of course everyone gets the COVID episode, but it feels a bit LATE to do a COVID episode.
